norway, west coast, 2008

juli 2008, 6 days off, what to do? i went for a little walkabout in norway, unplanned, just buying train-, bus- and ferry tickets as i go along, taking my camera out...

first destination: trondheim.

it took me about 12 hours by train to get there. i stayed in a hostel and together with sindy and rachel from switzerland (whom i met in the hostel) we "did" trondheim. here the view from the castle.

nice colorful houses, standing on poles, on the river in the center of town.
me with sindy and rachel on munkeholmen.
on the way to munkeholmen. the tour guide told the history of this fortress, first it was a monastery for some 500 years, then a prison, the german used it as an anti-aircraft base and a prison, and now tourists can leave their money there.
since we spoke german, the tour guide gave us a little private insight after the other tourists left: a little shed was the prison for german solders, and here the inscription says that walter friebe was locked up here for 5 days because he was drunk.
cool statue outside the art museum,
some church where some christians have lit candles.
some angel outside some church.

or someone else somewhere else. do net remember.

anyway, this is in trondheim.

rachel had brought strange rites from switzerland with her.

we had to invent a poem, and then sniff tobacco from switzerland!

in trondheim i then bought a ticket for the hurtigruten, the old post liners going along the norwegian coast. i booked a cabin southbound from trondheim to bergen.
on deck.
i found the captain of the boat being a bit overcautious with hygiene.

here a collection of different antiseptic hand rinses are placed outside the restaurant.

i laid in the warm jacousy on deck - that was really nice!
meeting another hurtigruten ship northbound.
the ship stops at many destinations on the way, here in molde.

along the way they pick up passengers and goods, traveling 365 days a year!

theatric view at night, this is about midnight.
all hands on deck! we arrive in bergen, the start and destination for the trip.
the whole of bergen center is a museum.
bergen fish market...
... is not only selling fish...
here some nice fresh whale meat besides the fish...
in norway we eat whale with green peas.
... and fur.

norway is one of the richest nations in the world, but the government puts out license to kill wolf, because of the damage on the sheep stock.

my nikon found some friends in bergen.
the intermission hostel, where i stayed in bergen.

unfortunately there was a metallica concert in bergen the day after i arrived, and it was impossible to get a bed, everything booked out, but then i found a bunk in a christian hostel.

just took some anti allergy medicine before i went in, christians tend to give me a rush, but it went quite well.

an old grave yard besides the train station in bergen.
queen victoria, seen from the maritime museum.
model of some old viking boat in the maritime museum.
it is a beautiful museum, by the way, very much nicer then the cultural history museum right beside!
some little man in the museum of nature.
mr. museum is a passionate hunter!
an alien scull in the museum of natural history.
picture taken from the train between bergen and oslo.
not so much snow, but after all it is in the middle of the summer.
